The Process of Wine Tasting

1. Sight:
Make sure the wine is clear - meaning not cloudy. A little cork is harmless, but you’ll want to check for sediments or the presence of particles.

2. Smell:
Exploring the aromas of wine is an important step in the full tasting experience of wine. Swirl the wine to release aromas and hold the glass to your nose and inhale. Use the aroma wheel to evaluate some of the aromas in the wine.

3. Taste:
Sip a small amount of wine, drawing in some air to aerate the wine, then swallow. Use the wheel to help you describe the flavors you taste.

4. Touch:
Evaluate how the wine ‘feels’ in your mouth, such as how the wine affects your mouth and throat as you swallow.

5. Overall impression:
Evaluate balance along with the appearance, aromas, taste, body and finish of the wine.
