The Wines of Spain

Spain has more vineyard area than any other country in the world – about 3.5 million acres. But Spain ranks third in total wine production. Because of the extremely dry climate, yields are very low. Even so, Spain produces about 950 million gallons of wine a year – about 2/3 as much wine as Italy or France.

Until recently, Spain was known mostly for bargain wines. But during the last few years the Spanish wine industry has changed rapidly and dramatically. Wine makers have made significant investments in improved vineyard practices, new winemaking technology, and modern bodegas.

Now, Spanish wines are starting to gain worldwide recognition for their quality and value.
